For the 13th year in a row, sake recorded the highest export value on record, increasing 18% from the previous year to approximately 47.5 billion yen. The number of countries and regions to which sake was exported reached 72, also a record high, and with a CAGR of approximately 18% for the period 2013-2022, it is an extremely fast-growing category. Surprisingly, the unit export price has increased significantly, from an average of 468 yen per 720 ml bottle in 2013 to 953 yen per 720 ml bottle in 2022. The total export value of the top 10 exporting countries accounted for a high 90% of total exports.
The top 10 are as follows.
1. China: 14.2 billion yen
2. U.S.A. 11.0 billion yen
3. Hong Kong 7.2 billion yen
4. Korea 2.5 billion yen
5. Singapore 2.3 billion yen
6. Taiwan 2.2 billion yen
7. Canada 1.2 billion yen
8. Australia 900 million yen
9. Vietnam 700 million yen
10. Malaysia 630 million yen
In Europe, the U.K. ranked first with 600 million yen and took 11th place overall. Among the top 10 exporting countries, only three countries and regions had export unit prices exceeding 1,000 yen per bottle: China at 1,380 yen, Hong Kong at 1,885 yen, and Singapore at 1,825 yen. Incidentally, whisky, the Japanese liquor with the highest export value, was 46 billion yen in FY2021, but 56 billion yen in 2022.
